About this Campaign

Hi, I am Pranesh, engineer by profession and an aspiring mountaineer! This New Year I will be attempting to summit Mt. Imja-tse (6189m) in the Himalayas, Nepal. On the way I will also be trekking to Mt. Everest Base camp (5364m) and some Buddhist monasteries.

As a mountaineer, I see the importance of having proper lighting especially when we are going on an expedition. Without proper lighting, we will be stranded in darkness and become vulnerable at night. For one in two households in rural India, living in darkness is a way of life. Often, a kerosene lamp is the only source of light in the household. When the night falls, they will be stranded in darkness, not just for a night, but for a lifetime.

My expedition is going to be a tough 18 day journey, from 17 Dec 2011- 3 Jan 2012, in very cold and harsh conditions. I wish to dedicate this expedition for raising loans through Milaap. The loans raised in this campaign will be able to help villagers in West Bengal to get solar lamps, to replace the kerosene lamp that they are using.

Helping people to help themselves is the only solution to sustainably solve our social issues. Therefore, I choose to raise loans instead of donations where a loan is going to empower them for a lifetime. Women who earn their living doing zari embroidery, like Rosonara Gazi and Asma Mistri will be able to be more productive and earn more once the lights are installed.

In other words, 100% of the money you have put into my campaign will get back to you albeit on the way it will help improve many lives.

I hope that you will join me in my cause and make a difference in the lives of the less-fortunate. You can either pay through causevox or transfer the amount to the Milaap Singapore bank account and save on transaction fees.

I expect that Internet services will be patchy and slow en route to Mt. Imja-tse but I will try my best to keep updating this page!
